On March 19, 2011, the New York Times published an article with this caption under one of few pictures released by U. S. Navy: “The United States Navy destroyer Barry fired Tomahawk missiles from the Mediterranean Sea on Saturday. The Navy provided this photograph, taken through night-vision lenses.” The copyright written by “Petty Officer First-class Nathanael Miller/United States Navy.” Another picture claimed the “Pentagon said more than 100 missiles were targeted at Libya’s air-defense systems.”

On the same night, I set the camera on a small segment of my liquid crystal display, while activating iTunes visualizer. I took one photograph every two seconds for several minutes and altered the pictures to resemble a night vision and processed the images into a time-lapse animation. I uploaded the movie to YouTube one day after the launch of Operation Odyssey Dawn.

CONTENT | Headline: Operation Odyssey Dawn | Description: Screen Sea (March 20, 2011) Seen through night-vision lenses from an undisclosed location, the sky lit up in flashes and anti-aircraft missile fire. The barrage of guided cruise missiles, fired from ships and submarines, made thunderous explosions as they hammered military positions along the seacoast. The attack triggered air raid sirens. A senior military official, not authorized to speak on the record, stated that the cruise missiles, flying at 550 miles per hour at low altitude over land and sea, are able to inflict severe damage. I photographed the black sky filled with streaks and blinding flashes of light. Red tracer fire and the sound of flak and flares are audible.
